Video Game Museum begins second fundraising drive
San Francisco - November 28, 2011 - The Museum of Art and Digital Entertainment (The MADE) kicked off its second fundraising campaign today. The Level 2 fundraising drive has a goal of $20,000, which will fund the operation of the MADE for another six months. As a non-profit video game museum, the MADE will use these funds to continue its free
programming classes for kids, and to keep the lights on for the Museum’s general use.
The MADE is a 501c(3) non-profit museum dedicated to the preservation of videogames, and the presentation of games as art. The History of 3D is the first exhibit hosted by the Museum since it secured a location in October. The MADE raised $20,000 on crowd-funding site Kickstarter.com, and has used those funds to pay for its new facilities.
"in the four months since we opened the doors of the MADE, we’ve accomplished every goal we set. Our students are learning Python, our attendees are playing significant games across many systems, and our community has grown to support talks, tournaments and co-working days," said Alex Handy, director of The MADE. “Indie developers are working on their games at The MADE, and our students are enthusiastically learning math as a by-product of their programming lessons. Now, we just need to ensure the MADE’s continued operation through tax-deductible financial contributions."
Henry Lowood, Curator for History of Science & Technology Collections at Stanford University Libraries and founding member of The MADE's board of directors, said that "Digital games without a doubt have become one of the central creative media available for entertainment, art and other forms of expression. So much so that contemporary
cultural history is difficult to talk about without including digital games. As a result, not only will the history of this medium be lost if we do not preserve the history of digital games, but there is more at stake: we will be unable to provide a complete cultural history of our times.”
Donors interested in supporting the MADE can donate at http://www.themade.org/node/84 via PayPal, Google Wallet, and Amazon Payments.
The MADE’s first exhibit, the History of 3D, will be appearing in its entirety at Game Developers Conference in March, and all of the included games will be playable on the show floor. That exhibit will include the following games:
1982 Atari 5200 - Star Raiders
1983 Vectrex - Web Warp
1989 Arcade/Xbox - Hard Drivin
1991 Arcade/PS2 - Star Blade
1992 Arcade/Saturn - Virtua Racing
1993 SNES - Starfox
1993 Arcade/32x - Virtua Fighter
1994 3D0 - Alone in the Dark
1994 Pippin - Marathon
1995 Virtual Boy - Red Alarm
1995 PS1 - Wipeout
1996 Saturn - Nights Into Dreams
1996 N64 - Super Mario 64
1988 Mac - The Colony
1992 Mac - Wolfenstein 3D
1993 Mac - Pathways Into Darkness
1993 Mac - Doom
1995 Mac - Descent
1996 Mac - Quake
Well what do you guys think about it?
